This accessory set in 1:72 scale from Black Dog represents the AQM-37 Jayhawk aerial training target. It is not an aircraft kit but a store with which a model of a carrier aircraft is completed. It is an unobtrusive part, but one that gives a composition a clear classification at once: the model changes from a combat machine into a participant in trials or live firing.
The AQM-37 Jayhawk is a small unmanned training target developed by Beechcraft. It does not take off under its own power: a combat aircraft carries it under the wing, and after release a liquid-fuel rocket motor accelerates it to supersonic speed. The task of the target is to imitate the behavior of anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles during the training of crews and the testing of weapons systems, so it can fly in various flight profiles and at various altitudes. The air and naval arms of the United States and several allied countries used it, and thanks to its successful design it stayed in service for decades in gradually revised versions.
Rinse the parts in lukewarm soapy water before painting; traces of mold release agent otherwise prevent the finish from adhering. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and protect your airways while sanding. The parts are joined with super glue. Training targets wore conspicuous warning finishes, so it pays to spray them separately from the carrier aircraft and hang them on at the end; a small part is easier to mask away from the model.
