About product

Exhaust nozzles of the B-1B Lancer in 1:72 scale

A set of the Metallic Details brand replaces the plastic exhaust nozzles on a model of the B-1B strategic bomber in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit but an accuracy accessory to a model the modeler obtains separately. The benefit is twofold: a thin wall at the edge instead of thick plastic, and depth that can be seen into from behind without the eye stopping at a blind surface.

Why the rear of the airframe in particular

The B-1B carries four engines in pairs in nacelles under the center section, so from behind a row of four nozzles side by side faces the viewer directly. Any inaccuracy is thereby repeated four times and is immediately conspicuous — on one nozzle a coarse edge would pass, on four it will not. In 1:72 scale the longitudinal seam inside a plastic cone is also hard to sand, because you cannot reach it with even the narrowest file. A finished casting makes that work fall away.

Fitting and painting tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry. Remove the casting remains with a saw and level the surface on sandpaper laid on glass, so that the edge seats flat. Before gluing, try fitting all the nozzles at once and look at the model from behind at eye level — the four must be in one plane and at the same projection, or the model will look crooked even with the rest built perfectly. Paint separately on a stick: a darker metal shade inside, a lighter steel one outside and light heat discoloration toward brown and blue at the end of the nozzle. Stir metallic paints thoroughly before applying; the pigment sinks to the bottom. A very fine application of dark pigment to bring the grooves out proves itself at the end; do not put matte clear on the metal surface any more, as the effect would disappear. Glue with superglue, ideally gel, which gives time to set them in place.

Who the set is for

  • builders of large American bombers in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who want a clean and deep finish to the engines
  • anyone interested in metallic painting and thermal effects
  • more advanced modelers with experience of cast parts

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, which it does not hold. Paints, glue and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a detail accessory to a kit in 1:72 scale; you buy the model itself separately.

The positioning. The nozzles have to be in one plane and projecting equally; fit them dry first and check the model from behind at eye level.

Paint the parts separately on a stick, a darker shade inside and a lighter one outside, and color the end of the nozzle lightly toward brown and blue. Always stir metallic paint thoroughly.

Better not on the metal surfaces of the nozzles; matte clear suppresses their effect. A fine application of dark pigment into the grooves is enough.
