A small but fundamental accessory. A turned metal pitot tube for a model of the BAE Systems Hawk 100 series in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker MASTER. It is not an aircraft kit; the model itself has to be obtained separately.
On a model in 1:72 scale the probe is only a few millimeters long, and every deviation on it shows all the more. A plastic part has to be oversized because of the mold and is easily deformed while the sprue remnant is removed. Turned brass holds the shape exactly, the tip is sharp and the surface smooth with no need for sanding. Third, there is durability: a probe at the very tip of the nose is caught by the fingers of practically everybody who picks up a model, and plastic will not survive that once.
Cut the plastic probe off and level the surface, then drill the hole with a micro drill matching the diameter of the pin. Set the metal part with gel super glue, which does not run into the surroundings and gives you a second to align it. Before painting, degrease the metal with spirit and use a primer for metal. Apply the paint in thin coats; a thick coat on a small part rounds off the edges and destroys the sense of slenderness. Fit the probe only after varnishing and the decals; the model is then easier to hold. Wipe off any fingerprints on the brass before gluing, as grease will show through under the paint later.
An accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
