Beehives are among the small things that reveal at first glance where a scene is set. Standing by the wall of a cottage, at the edge of an orchard or on a strip between fields, they give a diorama a rural character without major work on the terrain. They also carry color: beekeepers have long painted them in bright shades so that the bees find their way better, and that does a model just as much good.
The accessory is rendered in 1:72 scale, that is at a size matching the usual figures and hardware of this scale. The number of pieces and their rendition are given in the manufacturer's description. The accessory is small and so it will not take up much space in a scene, yet it draws the eye and takes being placed several pieces side by side.
Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder back. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. Stand the hives in a row with gaps between them and turn their hive entrances the same way, as tends to be the case in reality. Play the finish out into several shades, add a darker patina into the joints and finally unify the surface with a matte varnish. A trodden patch with no grass suits the ground under the hives, and taller growth around them.
