This is not an aircraft model but a set of masking stencils for a Bf 109 E model in 1:72 scale. The masks define the control surfaces — the ailerons, the elevators and the rudder — so that they can be sprayed separately, in a subtly different shade or with a different level of gloss. It is precisely the difference between metal and fabric covering that is the detail which gives a small model credibility, but it is hard to mask by hand. The number and the shape of the individual parts are stated on the packaging. The masks are cut for a particular kit, so check before buying that they match the model you are building.
The Bf 109 E was a single-engine fighter with a liquid-cooled inverted V12 engine, all-metal construction and a low-mounted wing. Its control surfaces were covered with fabric stretched over a framework, so they look different from the smooth metal skin of the rest of the airframe — fabric has a visible rib structure and reflects light differently. A model therefore looks better when these surfaces are painted separately.
Finish the base camouflage first and let it dry, and only then lay the masks in place. Press the edges down with a blunt tool and spray the paint in thin coats at right angles to the surface. The difference for the fabric does not have to be pronounced — often a shift of a single tone or a change of gloss is enough for the effect to work. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has set, pulling it at a sharp angle. In 1:72 scale work with reduced pressure and more thinned paint, so that the transition is not coarse.
The set is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
