This is one of the first series versions of the Emil — the E-3 sub-version, distinguished by heavier armament with two wing-mounted 20 mm MG FF cannons supplemented by a pair of fuselage machine guns. The model is a classic injection-molded kit that calls for standard modeling skills: cutting parts from the sprues, cleanup, gluing and painting. The Messerschmitt Bf 109E (Emil) was the Luftwaffe's mainstay fighter at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s and in the first years of the Second World War. The E-3 sub-version was among the early series aircraft — compared with earlier machines it brought heavier offensive armament in the form of wing-mounted MG FF cannons. The aircraft was powered by a V-12 DB 601 engine with direct fuel injection, which kept its power even under negative g. The Emil proved itself in the campaigns of 1939 and 1940 and formed the basis for later, more heavily armed versions.
Cut the parts from the sprues and glue them with a thin liquid modeling cement. Paint and detail the cockpit interior before closing up the fuselage, and mask the clear canopy while spraying. Apply a primer and colors with an airbrush, apply decals over a gloss coat, and highlight the panel lines with a wash. Early Emils suit a mottled camouflage on the upper surfaces with wavy patterns on the fuselage; add moderate weathering matching frontline service.
