An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale capturing a less known branch of the Bf 109 family — the carrier version T in its second rendering, the T-2. It differs from ordinary Bf 109s above all in its greater wingspan, which is apparent on the model at first glance and makes it a rewarding addition to a collection beside the standard versions.
The Bf 109T came about as a carrier version intended for the planned German aircraft carrier. It was based on the Bf 109E version, received a greater wingspan with folding tips, airbrakes, a tailhook and equipment for a catapult launch. When the construction of the aircraft carrier ended, the machines were modified into the T-2 form with the carrier equipment removed and deployed as land-based fighters. The large wing gave them a short take-off and good handling at low speeds, which came in useful at cramped and windy airfields in the north and on the coast. The power came from a liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz V engine.
Watch the dihedral and the symmetry of the wings — on the version with the greater span an inaccuracy shows more than on a standard 109. Finish the cockpit before you close the fuselage; pre-cut masks will deal cleanly with the frames of the canopy. German schemes with hard transitions on the sides of the fuselage are rewarding with masking putty, while soft blotches are managed by an airbrush at low pressure. Under the decals, apply a gloss compatible with the paint used, and in the end you unify the surface with a matte overcoat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
