Eleven markings for the British Boulton Paul Defiant turret fighter in 1:72 scale. The list runs from the 1937 prototype through Battle of Britain machines to night-camouflaged aircraft and a training example from the end of 1942.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Boulton Paul Defiant was built on an idea that the Royal Air Force considered promising at the end of the 1930s: concentrate all the armament in a powered turret worked by a second crew member. The airplane had no forward-firing machine guns at all. The prototype lifted off in August 1937 and over Dunkirk in May 1940 it scored an opening success, because the enemy mistook the silhouette for a Hurricane and attacked from behind. Once that surprise had passed, Defiants became easy targets and No. 141 Squadron suffered heavy losses over Dover on July 19, 1940.
The type then found a use in night defense, where the heavy turret mattered less. The sheet therefore puts day machines of the summer of 1940 side by side with night-finished aircraft of No. 151, No. 255 and No. 264 Squadrons and of the Polish No. 307 Squadron from Kirton-in-Lindsey, the Canadian No. 410 Squadron and an example of an OTU training unit from November 1942. The first production aircraft from the trials at Boscombe Down in September 1939 and the prototype in rebuilt form are represented too.
The sheet is intended for plastic models in 1:72 scale; the kit itself is not part of it. Before application wash the part in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry completely. The motifs are separated from the film one at a time, slid off the backing into position and pressed down with a soft brush. The squadron code letters seat more easily when there is a smooth varnished surface under them. Wipe adhesive residue away with a damp cloth before it dries into a matte stain.
