About product

Masking set 1:72 Cessna O-1A/TL-19A Bird Dog (Peewit)

A masking set in 1:72 scale for the light observation and liaison aircraft Cessna Bird Dog in the O-1A and TL-19A versions. It holds pre-cut masking shapes for the glazing and is used before spraying a finished model. It is not a kit of the aircraft or a spare part for one.

The real subject

The Bird Dog is a high-wing monoplane derived from a civil Cessna, adapted for army observation, artillery spotting and liaison. The key thing for the modeler is its glazing: the cockpit has practically its whole upper and side perimeter glazed, including windows above the pilot and large rear windows. The observer had to see out in every direction, and that is exactly what makes a model of the Bird Dog one of the most demanding subjects to mask in its size class. There are dozens of small panes with thin frames, where cutting tape by hand would take more time than the whole rest of the build. The TL-19A designation belongs to the training form of the same type.

How to use the set

Degrease the glazing and let it dry. Stick the masks on in turn, pane by pane, and keep checking that no gap has been left between them. Smooth the edges with a blunt tool. On divided glazing it pays to spray the color of the frames first, let it dry properly and only then continue with the primer and the camouflage. Take the masks off once the last coat has dried, and preferably one at a time, so you do not tear a neighboring edge away. If the model is to get a varnish, apply it only after unmasking.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of light observation aircraft in 1:72 scale.
  • Modelers who do not want to mask a large number of small panes by hand.
  • Those who build hardware for artillery spotting and forward air control.
  • Anyone who wants to shorten the most time-consuming part of a build.

This is an accessory for building. The kit of the aircraft, paints and glue are not included in the package. Check the match with your kit beforehand.

FAQ

The cockpit is glazed practically all the way around, including the windows above the pilot and the large rear windows. There are therefore markedly more small panes with thin frames than on an ordinary fighter.

It is not. This is only a masking set; the kit of the Bird Dog has to be obtained separately.

It is one of the designations of the same type in its training form. The outline of the glazing matches the O-1A version.

It is better one at a time and shortly after the paint has dried. On densely divided glazing there is then no risk of tearing the edge on a neighboring pane away.
