A sheet of decals in 1:72 scale from the British brand Xtradecal, issued as the second part of a series for the seventieth anniversary of the Normandy landings in June 1944. It focuses on the multi-engine aircraft of the Royal Air Force and on a glider. It is not a kit but a standalone sheet of markings for a finished painted model. The particular machines and the extent of the markings are given on the packaging and in the instructions, so compare it before buying with the model you want to use the sheet on.
In June 1944 the Allied aircraft deployed over the landing area were given temporary identification stripes, alternately black and white, on the wings and the fuselage. It was a purely recognition measure meant to reduce mistaken identity in intense traffic, and it was applied in the field, often hurriedly and unevenly. The multi-engine machines of the RAF were at that time carrying out transport, towing, reconnaissance and bombing duties, while gliders served to put troops down. The stripes were gradually removed over the following weeks, first from the upper surfaces.
Large decals behave differently from small markings. Leave them in the water only briefly, until the carrier film releases, and carry them to the model together with the backing, from which you slide them off only in place, otherwise a long stripe will break or fold over. Water and air always form under a large area, so press them out with a soft brush from the center toward the edges and finally press the edge down with a piece of absorbent paper. If a stripe has to be drawn over a raised detail or an edge, it is safer to cut it with a sharp knife than to stretch it by force.
The package contains the decal sheet only. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it.
