About product

1:72 DAP Beaufort Mk.VIII RAAF photo-etched set (Brengun)

This item is not an aircraft kit but an accessory to a model you already have built or under construction. It holds parts in thin etched metal with which the details of the plastic kit of the Beaufort Mk.VIII in Australian configuration, named in the product title, are replaced or completed. The accessory is made by the Czech company Brengun.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

Injected plastic has a technologically fixed minimum wall thickness. In 1:72 scale, features such as instrument consoles, seat belts, grilles, brackets and thin bulkheads therefore come out much heavier than reality would allow. Etched sheet solves it a different way: the part is practically without thickness at the scale and it carries sharp detail of a kind that cannot be achieved in a mold for plastic. The cockpit and the external details then do not look coarse when seen from close up.

Tips for working it

Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface rather than with nippers, which bend the metal. Level the remains of the tabs with a needle file. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two razor blades, always toward the etched score line. A thicker part that resists can be annealed briefly over a flame; the material gives and does not crack when bent. Degrease the metal with alcohol before gluing and cover it with a primer, otherwise paint will not hold on the smooth surface. It is bonded with super glue applied with a pin, and on larger areas epoxy helps, as it gives you time to adjust the position of a part.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want to push the detail of a kit beyond the contents of the box
  • builders of twin-engine machines with extensive glazing, where the cockpit is clearly visible
  • anyone interested in the equipment of the Royal Australian Air Force in the Second World War
  • modelers with basic experience of working with photo-etched parts

This is an accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of photo-etched metal parts that you add to a plastic kit you already own. The model itself is not in the package.

It is cut for the Special Hobby kit. With another model of the same aircraft you have to reckon on extra fitting and modifications.

A scalpel with a new blade, a hard cutting surface, tweezers, a needle file and super glue. A photo-etch bending tool makes the work much easier, but two razor blades can stand in for it.
