1:72 de Havilland Mosquito NF.XII / NF.XIII with A.I. Mk.VIII radar nose conversion set is a conversion set with the characteristic radar nose of the night fighter Mosquitoes. It supplements a part-built kit and does not make up a model of the aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
This conversion accessory changes the shape of the front fuselage to match the NF.XII and NF.XIII night fighter versions. Instead of a battery of machine guns in the nose, those carried a radar housing that was called the thimble for its shape. The package is meant to be worked into a plastic kit and does not represent an aircraft on its own.
The twin-engined de Havilland Mosquito was among the most versatile machines of the Second World War, and in the night fighter role it found one of its strongest uses. The NF.XII came about by reworking older machines, while the NF.XIII were newly built and had the universal wing that allowed drop tanks to be carried. Both carried the centimetric A.I. Mk.VIII radar, which markedly improved the accuracy of interception compared with the earlier metric-wave sets.
The original nose is cut off, so measure the line of the cut out in advance and check it several times. Cut cautiously rather than boldly and sand the rest away; you can always take material off, but putting it back is harder. The seam at the joint can be evened out with a thin layer of filler and sanding over wet paper. Polish the round shape of the housing so that no flat spots are left after sanding.
