The surface of a Second World War field airfield, laid from pierced steel planking. Plates like these hooked into one another along their edges and in a few days turned a waterlogged meadow into a taxiway and a runway where there was neither the time nor the material for concrete. The round holes saved weight and let water drain away. It is exactly that regular perforated grid that catches the eye in period photographs, and it gives a finished model a setting that a bare board never will.

A square 15 centimeters on a side corresponds in this scale to an area of roughly 10.8 x 10.8 meters, so a fighter fits on it together with a piece of its surroundings, and on larger machines it serves as a section of surface under the fuselage. Wash and degrease the base before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold well on the smooth plastic. Steel planking on airfields weathered and rusted quickly, so it pays to break up the base shade with stippling and a thinned rust tone. A dry brush drawn across the surface picks out the edges of the holes and the joints between the plates; the joints, by contrast, call for a darker wash. A little mud, dust or grass growing through the holes then ties the surface to what is around it.
For modelers who display aircraft or vehicles in 1:72 scale and want to stand them on a period-appropriate surface, whether in a display case or as the basis of a small scene. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
