About product

Model Scene 1:72 Fiber cement slates, two sheets

A scenery material from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene for dioramas in 1:72 scale. The package contains two flat sheets of fiber cement slate covering. It is not a finished roof and not a building kit, but a loose material that you glue onto your own substrate. Besides roofs the slates also suit the cladding of gable ends and the side walls of sheds and outbuildings, which is a common solution with this covering.

The real subject

Fiber cement board was used from the first half of the twentieth century as a low-cost and non-flammable substitute for both shingle and tile. Small flat slates are laid with an overlap, usually turned diagonally, and create a characteristic regular grid. The covering is typical of Czech farm, industrial and railroad structures, sheds, garages and outbuildings of the postwar period. In time it grays to a cool tone, greens with moss on north faces, and individual boards break, so the boarding beneath them often shows.

Usage and painting tips

Lay from the bottom up with an overlap following guide lines drawn in pencil, otherwise the grid will drift, which shows at once on a regular slate covering. Paint only once it is glued on. Fiber cement is a cool gray, so start from a base mixed from gray with a hint of blue or green, never from brown. Irregular toning of the individual boards, a dark wash into the joints and a greenish pigment on the north side of the roof give a scene credibility. A few broken or missing boards bring a scene markedly to life.

Who the material is for

  • builders of dioramas and display cases in 1:72 scale
  • farm, railroad and industrial structures of the postwar period
  • sheds, garages, outbuildings and their wall cladding
  • modelers who scratch-build their own buildings

The material is supplied unpainted, for further work. The glue, the paints and the supporting structure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A board used from the first half of the twentieth century as a low-cost and non-flammable substitute for shingles and tiles.

Yes. In reality the slates were often put on gable ends and the side walls of sheds and outbuildings too, so wall cladding is a faithful solution.

A cool gray with a hint of blue or green. Brown tones belong to wood and tile and look out of place on fiber cement.

No, these are two sheets of covering. You prepare the roof substrate and the building yourself.
