Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 73 is based in the north of Germany and was the first Luftwaffe unit to re-equip with the Eurofighter. It is named after Johannes Steinhoff, a fighter pilot of the Second World War who survived severe burns after the crash of a jet machine and in the postwar years worked his way up to the highest posts in the Luftwaffe and in the military structure of NATO. It was this wing that had a special scheme sprayed on after ten years of operating the new type.
The motifs cover the anniversary artwork on the tail surfaces and on the fuselage, together with the ordinary badges of the unit and the relevant identification numbers. The color print is in register, so the multicolored elements hold their outline even after application to the curved surface of the fin.
The Eurofighter is a twin-engine tailless aircraft with a delta wing and canard foreplanes, which in German service replaced two older generations of fighters at once. It was with this unit that the first crews were trained, and that is why special finishes keep coming back here.
The German gray camouflage on this type is made up of several close shades, and a special motif stands out on it only when the base is really smooth. Before work, cut the film into individual pieces, immerse them briefly and let them soften out of the water. On the more complicated transitions a decal softener will help; it is applied with a brush from above and must not be smoothed in any way until dry.
The contents are a printed sheet. Plastic parts, masks and paints are not supplied with it and have to be obtained separately.
