This is an accessory, not an aircraft model. The resin interior set is there to replace the plastic cockpit in a Starfighter kit you have already bought. At 1:72 the cockpit is small, but on the Starfighter it is surprisingly easy to see under the long clear canopy, so the difference between the simplified tub from the kit and a full casting is obvious on the finished model at first glance. The set is cut for the Revell kit — and that matters, because CMK also makes F-104 interiors for other kits, and individual kits differ in the dimensions of the cockpit.
Injection-molded plastic has its limits when it comes to cockpits. The side walls tend to be smooth, the instrument panel is suggested by shallow engraving and the seat is simplified. A resin casting manages the stirrups, the wiring, the levers and the fine relief of the panels in one piece and with no parting line. Working with it is straightforward: you put the cockpit in place of the original part, finish the painting and close it up with the canopy. On the Starfighter it pays to finish the cockpit and try closing the canopy before the fuselage is glued together.
Wash the parts in warm soapy water to remove the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and level the surface by sanding, ideally wet and with respiratory protection. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). To seat the cockpit in the fuselage you will usually have to sand down the inner walls of the fuselage halves; go in small steps and keep dry-fitting as you work. Interiors of modern jets are painted with a dark base, and once that is dry the details are brought out with a dry brush and the panels accentuated with a dark wash. Finish the seat harness and the handles of the ejection seat with a brush at the end.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
