This kit from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi captures the multirole combat aircraft F-35B Lightning II in 1:72 scale, in a special release devoted to the US Marine Corps squadron VMFA-121, the Green Knights. The B version differs from the other F-35 variants in its ability to take off short and land vertically, which is reflected in the layout of the airframe with the lift fan behind the cockpit.
The F-35B is the version of the Lightning II family intended for the US Marine Corps and for operation from amphibious ships or short runways. The lift fan and the swiveling engine nozzle allow a vertical landing with a full combat load in the internal weapons bays. The squadron VMFA-121 became the first operational F-35B unit in the world and has been based at Iwakuni in Japan since 2017 — hence the interest of Japanese manufacturers in its machines.
A modern stealth aircraft calls for a smooth surface: align the parts carefully and fill the seams, and bring out the panel lines only very discreetly. The characteristic look comes from the differently toned bands of radar-absorbent coating along the panels — it pays to spray them through fine masks in a slightly different shade of gray. A gloss coat before the decals will prevent silvering.
