An injection-molded plastic kit of a rare special-purpose aircraft in 1:72 scale from Roden. It represents the conversion of the C-123 Provider transport into a night interdiction machine of the Black Spot program, with a markedly lengthened nose housing an extensive sensor suite. The box holds gray plastic parts with fine detail, clear parts for the glazing and a cockpit. Expect the parts of kits from this maker to carry sprue nubs and flash, which are worth cleaning up before the build.
The Black Spot program arose in the second half of the 1960s, when the US Air Force had two C-123 aircraft converted into experimental night interdiction machines for finding and destroying targets in darkness. Their characteristic feature was the lengthened nose with a large radar, infrared sensors and navigation equipment, which turned a transport aircraft into a night hunting platform. It was an experimental project with only a couple of aircraft converted, which makes the subject a sought-after rarity among modelers.
First clean the flash and the sprue nubs off the parts and dry-fit them thoroughly before gluing. Finish the cockpit and the interior first, and only then close up the fuselage; take care to seat the lengthened nose correctly and to balance the model properly. Use liquid cement for plastic, a primer and an airbrush; mask the glazing before painting. Bring the dark night finish to life with subtle transitions of shade, washes in the engraved lines and discreet patina.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
