About product

Fokker D.VII - rib tapes, five-color lozenge, 1:72 (Eduard)

A decal set from the Czech maker Eduard for a model of the German Fokker D.VII fighter biplane in 1:72 scale. It contains tapes printed in the five-color lozenge pattern, a detail that fundamentally changes the look of the wings and tail surfaces on German aircraft of the closing stage of the First World War. The set is intended as an accessory for a model already built and does not make up a model on its own.

The real subject

The Fokker D.VII was one of the best German fighters of 1918 - reliable, easy to handle and forgiving of a pilot's mistakes. The covering of the wings and tail surfaces on German aircraft of the day was commonly made of factory-printed fabric with so-called lozenge camouflage, an irregular mosaic of color fields. Narrow tapes of the same fabric were then sewn over the seams and over the ribs. In period photographs these tapes are a prominent recognition feature, and on a model without them an area of lozenge covering looks empty.

Application tips

The base must be smooth and glossy - varnish the area with gloss varnish before application, or a whitish haze will appear under the decal. Cut the individual tapes with a sharp scalpel close to the edge of the print, soak them briefly in warm water and transfer them onto the model with a soft brush. Line them up by the ribs rather than by the edge of the wing. Use decal softener sparingly and let it work without pressing, so that the tape draws down onto the relief of the rib and does not wrinkle. Once dry, seal the joints with varnish and finish the whole surface with a matte or semi-matte varnish, so that the covering looks like fabric rather than film.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of First World War aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Builders who want to take lozenge covering all the way to the detail
  • Those who do not trust themselves to cut the tapes by hand from a lozenge sheet
  • Collectors of the output of the Czech maker Eduard

The set contains decals only. The model, paints, glue and varnish are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a sheet of decals - an accessory applied to a finished and painted model. The model of the aircraft has to be obtained separately.

On the real aircraft, narrow tapes of the same printed fabric were sewn over the ribs of the covered surfaces. On a model they create a regular rhythm across the wing, and without them lozenge covering looks unnaturally smooth.

Apply it onto a gloss base, blot the excess water carefully and use a softener. Any residual gloss is then unified by a final matte varnish.

A list of the printed items is stated by the manufacturer on the packaging. Please go by the photograph of the package and the manufacturer's data.
