A die-cut masking set from the brand Omask for a model of the Fw 190 D fighter aircraft in 1:72 scale. It is neither a kit nor a part of the aircraft but a working accessory with which the canopy glazing is covered during painting. The masks are die-cut to the shape of the framing of one particular kit, so check before buying that the set matches the model you are building. In a small scale masking is worth even more than in a large one, because cutting tiny frames out of tape by hand is tedious and imprecise. The shape of the masks corresponds to the IBG kit.
The Fw 190 D is a late version of the German Fw 190 fighter aircraft in which the radial engine was replaced with a liquid-cooled V engine. The change called for the lengthening of the forward as well as the rear part of the fuselage, and it is to that that the aircraft owes its unusually slender profile compared with the earlier versions. The canopy is fairly small and intricate, so on a model in 1:72 scale it is one of the most difficult parts of the painting.
Peel the individual pieces off the backing sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers and touch them with your fingers as little as possible. Clean and degrease the clear part before applying them. Lay the mask down from one edge of the frame and press it on progressively; on the curves a toothpick will help. Close the edges carefully, otherwise the paint will creep underneath, which is harder to put right in a small scale than in a large one. Spray in several thin coats and at lower pressure. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has set but before it has fully cured. Use the leftovers of the masks to cover the glazing for the rest of the build, so that the clear part is not dusted.
It will be appreciated by anyone who builds models in 1:72 scale and does not want to struggle with cutting tiny frames out of masking tape. Suitable for beginners and experienced modelers alike.
