Quickboost 1:72 Fw 190A - Resin Exhausts

This set from the Quickboost brand, made by the Czech company Aires, holds resin exhausts for models of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190A fighter in 1:72 scale. The manufacturer recommends it for the Fw 190A kits from Eduard. It is not an airplane model - the kit is not included in the package. It is a replacement part that takes the place of the corresponding plastic parts from the box.

Why replace the plastic exhausts

The exhausts of the Fw 190A are very much on show - they project from under the cowling of the radial engine straight into the viewer's eye. Injected plastic, however, has its technological limits: the mouths of the exhaust pipes tend to be blind, that is only suggested as a dimple, and the edges are soft. Resin castings are poured into a mold with no sliding cores, so they have genuinely drilled, open mouths and finer, sharper surface detail. Once painted, the difference from a plastic part is clear at first glance.

The real subject

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190A was a single-engine fighter of the Luftwaffe, in service from 1941. It differed from the slim Messerschmitt Bf 109 above all in its powerplant: it had an air-cooled BMW 801 radial engine, a robust fuselage, a wide and stable landing gear and heavy armament. It was the radial engine that gave the Fw 190 its characteristic stocky nose and the typical arrangement of exhaust pipes led out along the sides of the cowling.

Use and working

  • Cut the parts from the casting blocks with a fine saw or a sharp knife - never snap them off.
  • Sand the remains of the blocks away, ideally wet; resin dust must not be inhaled.
  • Wash the finished parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove mold release residue and let them dry.
  • Bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate) - ordinary plastic cement does not work on resin.
  • Apply a primer before painting; fill the exhaust mouths with a dark shade and weather the surface with rust and soot tones.

Who the set is for

For modelers who build the Fw 190A in 1:72 scale and want to lift the level of the most visible details with little effort. With exhausts this is one of the simplest and most rewarding upgrades there is.

This is not a kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. When sanding resin, work wet and with your airways protected, use super glue in a well-ventilated area and protect your eyes and skin.

FAQ

It is not. This is only a set of resin exhausts, that is replacement detail parts. The Fw 190A kit in 1:72 scale has to be bought separately.

Super glue (cyanoacrylate). Ordinary plastic cement does not bite into resin, so it does not hold on it.

The resin castings have open, drilled exhaust mouths and finer surface detail. Plastic parts usually have the mouths only suggested and the edges softer.

Yes, that is worth doing. Mold release residue can remain on the surface of the castings and it spoils the grip of both glue and paint.
