About product

The German 80 cm K(E) railway gun in 1:72, Hobby Boss

A plastic kit of the legendary German 80 cm K(E) railway gun, known by the names Dora and Schwerer Gustav, in 1:72 scale from Hobby Boss. And straight to the most important point: even in 1:72 this is a giant model. The manufacturer gives a length of 1111.6 mm and a width of 210 mm, that is over 111 centimeters. Before you order the model, measure your display case or shelf. The contents of the package match that scale: 33 sprues and 1767 parts, photo-etched parts and nine sections of track for the gun to stand on.

The real subject

The 80 centimeter K(E) gun is the largest gun ever built and used in action. A caliber of 800 mm, a weight of over a thousand tons, shells weighing several tons and a range in the tens of kilometers. A colossus like that could not be moved by road; it ran on rails and, because of its width and weight, needed two parallel tracks. Hundreds of men set it up in a firing position, and the preparation took weeks. It was used in 1942 at Sevastopol against fortifications. Militarily it was a dead end, an absurdly costly, slow and vulnerable weapon, but as a piece of engineering it remains one of the most fascinating creations of artillery.

Building and painting tips

This is not a weekend project. With almost 1800 parts, divide the build into sections (bogies, platform, carriage, barrel, track) and finish and paint each one separately; assembling a giant model painted in one piece is a nightmare. There are no tracks to worry about here, which makes the railroad track all the more important: the ties deserve wood shades and drybrushing, the rails rust and a polished head from the passing wheels, and between the ties belong ballast, dust and spilled oil. It is precisely the rails that make the model call out for a base or a diorama; without being set into a ballast bed and terrain it looks half-finished, and besides, there is no other way to move it. The gun itself suits restrained weathering: dust, smoke traces at the muzzle, grease around the mechanisms.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers; 1767 parts and a long build, nothing quick about it.
  • Those who want a piece in their collection that nobody can overlook (over 111 cm).
  • Diorama builders: the track is in the package and a base suggests itself.
  • Anyone interested in artillery and extreme military engineering.
  • Modelers who have somewhere to put a model like this; check the space beforehand.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Enormous. The manufacturer gives a length of 1111.6 mm and a width of 210 mm, that is over 111 centimeters. Even in the small 1:72 scale it is a colossus a meter long, so measure where you will put it beforehand.

According to the manufacturer 1767 parts on 33 sprues, plus photo-etched parts. It is a demanding, long project for experienced modelers, certainly not a one-evening build.

Yes, nine sections of track are included. That is exactly why the model practically calls out for a base or a diorama; rails with ballast, ties and rust are half the final impression.

Because of its width and enormous weight. The colossus rested on several bogies that ran on two parallel tracks. Hundreds of men set it up in a firing position and the preparation took weeks.
