An injection-molded plastic kit of the German Tiger I heavy tank in its late production (Late) form, in 1:72 scale from the South Korean maker Academy. The 1:72 scale is a rewarding one for military vehicles: the model is compact, it goes together faster than a large 1:35 kit and a whole row of them fits in a display cabinet - yet there is still plenty of room for weathering. The contents of the box are shown on the packaging.
The Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger (Ausf. E) is probably the best known German tank of the Second World War. It entered combat in 1942, and the combination of thick frontal armor and an 88 mm gun made it, for a long time, an opponent that Allied tanks struggled to destroy from the front. The price was weight, high fuel consumption, demanding maintenance and expensive production - relatively few Tigers were built, and their reputation was always greater than their real numbers at the front. Late production differs from the earlier machines in a number of visible details: a new commander's cupola with periscopes instead of the older cupola with vision slits, all-steel road wheels without rubber tires, and simplified fittings on the hull.
Glue the plastic with liquid cement - it wicks into the seam by capillary action and pulls the joint together from the inside. With a tank the rule is: finish and paint the running gear first (the wheels, the tracks, the lower hull), because once the fenders and the superstructure are on you will no longer reach those places. It pays to paint and weather the tracks off the model and to fit them last. Apply a primer before painting and spray the camouflage with an airbrush in thin coats. After the gloss coat and the decals it is time for weathering: a dark wash brings out the rivets and hatches, drybrushing pulls out the edges, and fine chipping suggests worn bare metal. Finally add pigments - mud and dust effects on the running gear and the lower hull. In 1:72 keep the effects subtle: what looks realistic in 1:35 is easily overdone in a small scale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
