A set of small street furniture from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:72 scale. It contains drain grates and manhole covers, that is the elements that are in every real street and are missed most in a diorama. It is not a kit of a vehicle or an aircraft: it is an accessory for a scene that is let into the surface of the base.
A diorama convinces through small things. A flat gray area looks like an area, but as soon as you let a drainage grate and a few covers into it, a street begins to read out of it. These elements also do the composition a great service: they break up an empty spot, give the viewer a sense of scale and naturally justify traces of water and dirt. A fine metal or thin-walled part meanwhile manages the grating that in plastic would merge together at this scale.
First lay out on the base where they will go. Drain grates belong by the curb and in the lowest spot, whereas covers rather in the middle of the roadway or by the sidewalk. Into a base material that has not yet cured, press the part in gently so that it sits flush with the surface; into an already finished area, mill or cut a shallow seat. Then fill the joint all around with putty, otherwise the element will look stuck on.
Cast-iron elements are never black nor rusty orange over their whole area. Start from a dark gray, add brown rust only in the places where water runs down, and pick the edges that wheels ride over out lightly with a metallic shade. A dark wash will run into the grating and emphasize the depth, and around a cover it is worth suggesting a darker ring of settled dirt.
This is a diorama accessory, not a kit of a vehicle. The base, putty, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
