A photo-etched set in 1:72 scale for a model of the Grumman F-14A Tomcat carrier fighter. It refines the detail of a finished kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a two-seat carrier fighter aircraft of the US Navy, recognizable by its variable-geometry wing: for takeoff and landing it is spread, and in fast flight it sweeps back. The F-14A version is the first production form of the type and in modeling it is among the most popular subjects of all. The crew consists of a pilot and a systems operator in the rear cockpit, so it is the interior and its detail that tend to be very visible on a model.
Photo-etched elements replace the places where injection-molded plastic is thicker for production reasons than the scale would call for: thin sheet, grilles, linkages, buckles and similar small items. The difference tells above all in the places the viewer sees from close up. A list of the parts and their positions is given in the instructions supplied by the manufacturer, including which sections of the kit have to be sanded away before gluing.
The elements are held in the fret on thin tabs; separate them with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not by twisting. Make the fold all at once in a bending tool or between two blades, as straightening it afterwards tends to show. They are glued with cyanoacrylate in a small amount, as cement for plastic has no effect on metal. Before painting, degrease the elements and apply a base coat, as without it the paint does not hold on smooth metal and rubs off during handling.
The kit of the aircraft, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
