Replacement wheels with tread for a model of the Grumman F7F Tigercat in 1:72 scale. An accessory that sharpens the landing gear of a finished kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The twin-engined Grumman F7F was an unusually powerful machine for its day: it came about as a carrier fighter for large aircraft carriers and only just missed combat deployment in the Second World War. It shone later, in Korea, where night versions flew in the dark against ground targets. To this day it is among the most interesting piston fighters in shape.
Landing gear wheels tend to be the first thing on injection-molded kits that gives their age away. The parting line runs across the whole tread, the frame of the wheel is softly shaped and the tire looks like an inflated balloon. A replacement wheel made by another technology offers a seamless tire, a legible tread pattern and a clearly separated hub.
On a twin-engined machine this small thing carries more weight than it seems. The model stands on three points, and it is the main landing gear that carries the whole impression of the aircraft's stance: when the wheels are soft in shape, the machine looks ponderous even with an otherwise careful build.
The wheels are separated from the sprue gate with a saw or a cut of the scalpel, the mating surface of the pin is leveled and lightly roughened. They are glued with super glue; it works well to stand both wheels dry on a flat board first and check that the model does not stand crooked.
Painting is made simpler if the hub is sprayed separately and the tire gets a dark shade, gray rather than black; pure black rubber looks unnatural even on a small model. Pastel dust can then be rubbed lightly into the tread.
The package holds the wheels only; the aircraft model is sold separately.
