A decal sheet in 1:72 scale aimed at Hawker Hunter aircraft in the colors of the Royal Navy. These are wet decals, which release once soaked in water. The package holds the sheet and instructions; a plastic model, paints and glue are not part of it. Naval Hunters are interesting precisely because their finish differs markedly from the RAF machines that are usually built.
The Hunter was a single-engine jet with a swept wing, one of the most widespread British postwar types. With the navy it served above all in training roles and in supporting training activity, both in the single-seat and in the two-seat version with side-by-side seating. These machines tended to be strikingly colorful — a combination of bold shades and contrasting bands was meant to make them easy to see. For a modeler that means a model built to such a scheme looks quite different from a gray-green machine of a combat unit and draws the eye in a display case.
Bold schemes will test the quality of your masking. Spray the transitions between the color fields over a mask pressed firmly down all the way round, and apply the paint square to the edge rather than at an angle under the mask. Deep reds and oranges have poor covering power — spray a white or light gray base under them, otherwise you will need many coats and will lose the engraved detail. Let the paint cure thoroughly before the decals and spray an intermediate gloss coat. Small lettering in this scale takes only a minimum of handling, so move it with a damp brush and never press it with tweezers. Choose the final varnish according to whether you want the machine in a well-kept service condition, in which case rather a semi-gloss one.
The package holds only the decals. The model, paints and glue are not part of it.
