About product

Peewit 1:72 masking set — IAR-37, IAR-38 and IAR-39

This item is NOT a model of an aircraft but an accessory for the build. It is a set of precisely die-cut self-adhesive masks in 1:72 scale intended for models of the Romanian series of reconnaissance and observation biplanes IAR-37, IAR-38 and IAR-39. The masks cover the framing of the cabin glazing and usually also the tires of the wheels. One set can be used for all three related versions, because they match in shape in the area of the cabin. Peewit is a Czech brand specializing in masking templates for aircraft models.

The real subject

The IAR-37, IAR-38 and IAR-39 series was created at the Romanian IAR factory in Brasov in the second half of the 1930s as a multipurpose biplane for reconnaissance, directing artillery fire, communications and light bombing. The machines had fixed landing gear and open crew positions, and they differed above all in the powerplant — part of the series received a domestic radial engine, while another version had a license-built gasoline inline engine of German origin. The last and most numerous variant, the IAR-39, saw extensive use on the Eastern Front, where it flew mainly reconnaissance and observation duties. The type is among the most characteristic machines of the Romanian Air Force of that period.

Use

  • lift the piece of mask out of the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel
  • stick it on a degreased and dry surface and press the edges down thoroughly
  • spray several thin coats rather than one heavy one
  • lift the mask off while the paint is only dry to the touch
  • on a biplane, mask the cabin before the upper wing goes on, as the access is then far better

Who the set is for

For modelers building the Romanian Air Force of the Second World War and for anyone who wants sharp cabin frames in a small scale without laboriously cutting tape. It is especially worthwhile on biplanes, where the glazing is complex and access to the cabin is restricted by struts and bracing.

The set holds masking templates only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package. The masks are cut to fit a particular kit, and on a model of another origin the shape of the frames may differ.

FAQ

Yes. The IAR-37, IAR-38 and IAR-39 versions match in shape in the area of the cabin and the glazing and differ mainly in the engine, so the masking templates are common to all of them.

It is not. This is only a set of masking templates. The kit in 1:72 scale has to be bought separately.

On a biplane, before the upper wing goes on. Once it is fitted, the struts and bracing get in the way and working with tweezers is far harder.

They were multipurpose machines for reconnaissance, directing artillery fire, communications and light bombing, used above all on the Eastern Front.
