A kit of the Soviet Ilyushin Il-2 ground-attack aircraft in 1:72 scale from the Polish manufacturer Mistercraft. According to the name, the package is aimed at machines operated in the markings of the Luftwaffe and the Hungarian Air Force, that is, at captured aircraft. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Il-2 was a single-engine ground-attack aircraft built around an armored bathtub, which covered the engine, the radiators, the fuel system and the pilot. It was powered by a liquid-cooled V12 engine, and the armament consisted of wing cannons and machine guns with the ability to carry bombs and unguided rockets. Machines that fell into the hands of an opponent and were made serviceable were commonly remarked and used for trials, training and the evaluation of equipment. This practice was usual on all sides during the Second World War and in modeling terms it is interesting precisely for the unusual combination of shape and markings.
The procedure is the same as with other injection-molded models: a dry fit, gluing with a thin cement for polystyrene, sanding the seams and a primer. On remarked machines it pays to work with layers: the original coat, the oversprayed areas and the newly applied markings tend to have a different degree of gloss and of weathering. Spray the camouflage with an airbrush, apply the decals on a gloss varnish and help yourself with a softener, so that they settle into the engraved lines. At the end even the surface out with a matte or satin varnish and keep the patina within reasonable limits.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
