A tall factory chimney is the building by which an industrial district is recognized from a distance. For the sake of draft, brick chimneys were built as tall as possible, they tapered toward the top and at the top they were as a rule closed off by a bricked crown; on the body there tended to be footsteps or steel bands. In a diorama they fill a double role: they give a scene a vertical line that breaks up a flat board, and they unambiguously set the setting, whether it is a factory, a brickworks, a sugar mill or a shot-up suburb.
The feature is intended for 1:72 scale, that is, for scenes with aircraft, smaller equipment and figures of that scale. Before you set it into a scene, compare its height with the surrounding buildings and with the figures. A chimney comes across believably only when it clearly rises above its surroundings; when it levels with the other buildings, it loses its point.
Sink the foot of the chimney into the base, so that the building does not stand on the board as though stuck on, and bring the surrounding terrain up to it with modeling putty. Wash and degrease the surface before painting, choose the glue according to the material of the part and go through the procedure in the maker's instructions. Brick masonry suits a base in a middle value, into which the deviations are only then introduced: shade the individual bricks differently, draw the joints out with a light wash and dirty the crown with soot. Keep the deposit of soot near the mouth and let it run down one side, not evenly all the way around; a real chimney is dirtied by the wind, which blows predominantly from one direction.
