A resin scenic accessory from the Spanish brand MIG productions. It is not a kit of a piece of equipment but an element of the setting for a diorama or a display base in 1:72 scale. A tall factory chimney is extraordinarily useful in a small scale: it gives the scene a vertical landmark that would otherwise have to be replaced by several buildings, and it sets the action in an industrial or urban environment at once. The casting has the brickwork and the surface texture worked out, so after painting it does not read as a smooth tube.
In 1:72 scale most models of equipment are small and a scene easily falls apart into a flat area. A vertical chimney solves this problem: it closes the composition off, it gives the viewer scale and it creates a background against which the equipment stands out. It comes into its own in dioramas with armored vehicles and with aircraft, in settings of fighting in industrial areas, in postwar reconstruction and in civilian railroad scenes, where the same scale is commonly used.
Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, cut off the casting block, sand the base flat and protect your airways while sanding resin. Paint the brickwork from a darker base and then lighten individual bricks or courses irregularly, so that the surface does not look machine-made. Bring out the joints with a wash and the upper edges with a dry brush. A chimney is helped a great deal by soot settled around the mouth, vertical rain marks and moss or dust at the foot. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; with a tall part it pays to sink the base into modeling paste, so that it stands firmly and looks built into the terrain.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
