1:72 IS-3

IS-3 1:72 (Roden)

An injection-molded plastic model of the Soviet IS-3 heavy tank in 1:72 scale from the Roden brand. The tank is unmistakable thanks to the wedge-shaped front of its hull, nicknamed the pike nose, and the low hemispherical turret. The package holds injection-molded plastic parts and a sheet of decals; it builds like a classic plastic kit.

The real subject

The IS-3 was the final development stage of the Soviet IS series of heavy tanks of the Second World War. It carried a massive 122 mm gun and strongly sloped armor, which raised its resistance to hits. It practically never saw action in the fighting of the Second World War, but it first made a real impression at the victory parade of 1945, where its appearance struck the Allied observers. It then stayed in service long after the war.

Building and painting tips

With a tank it pays to assemble and paint the running gear with its wheels and tracks first, and only then close the hull. Glue the plastic parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic, then fill and sand the seams. Apply a primer before painting and lay the Soviet green on with an airbrush in thin coats. The sloped armor surfaces will come to life with light dry brushing of the edges, a dark wash into the detail and pigments for mud effects on the running gear.
