About product

Jagdpanther Sd.Kfz.173 in 1:72 scale from Revell

Injection-molded plastic kit of the German tank destroyer in the small 1:72 scale. Thanks to the scale the finished model asks little of your shelf space, so it displays well in a collection of armor and sits just as well in a smaller diorama. The number of parts, the contents of the decal sheet and the color schemes offered are stated on the box.

The real subject

The Jagdpanther, Sd.Kfz.173 in German nomenclature, was a tank destroyer deployed in the closing stage of the Second World War. In design it drew on the chassis and powertrain of the Panther medium tank, on which it carried a fixed casemate with a built-in 88 mm anti-tank gun. Doing without a rotating turret meant a lower silhouette and simpler production, but also a limited horizontal traverse of the barrel: a larger change in the direction of fire meant turning the whole vehicle. Steeply sloped frontal plates raised the resistance of the armor, yet the resulting weight put a strain on the running gear and the transmission.

Building and painting tips

Start with the running gear. It makes sense to paint the wheels, the rollers and the tracks before the hull is closed, because later neither a brush nor the stream from an airbrush will reach between them. Use thin cement on the plastic; it wicks into the joint by capillary action and leaves no overflow. Lay down a primer before painting, as it unifies the surface and reliably reveals any joint you have not sanded enough. Multicolor masking is best done at this scale with an airbrush at low pressure and with a soft transition, while a brush will handle the small patches. Build the weathering in layers: a dark wash in the engraved lines and around the rivets, drybrushing on the edges, pigments for dust and mud deposits in the wheel wells and on the tracks.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of armor in a single 1:72 scale
  • Diorama builders who need a smaller footprint than 1:35 scale
  • Beginners who want to try building a vehicle in a small scale
  • Anyone interested in the design of tank destroyers with a fixed casemate

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an injection-molded plastic kit that is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

In armor, 1:72 is one of the smaller formats and the finished vehicle fits comfortably into an ordinary display case. The exact dimensions of the finished model are stated on the box.

It shares the chassis and the powertrain with it, but instead of a rotating turret it has a fixed casemate with an anti-tank gun of larger caliber. Fire is therefore aimed by turning the whole vehicle.

The type of tracks is stated on the box and in the kit instructions, and we recommend checking it before you start building.
