A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:72 scale containing snow chains for the wheels of a light cross-country vehicle of the Jeep type. It is not a model of a car: it is an accessory with which a finished or part-built kit is equipped, usually when building a winter scene.
A winter diorama is recognized by small things: by the tracks in slushy snow, by snow on the fender and precisely by the chains. A chain is meanwhile a part that practically cannot be made in plastic, as it is a three-dimensional net of wires in which the gaps matter more than the mass. Photo-etched sheet solves that by being see-through and thin; once bent around the tire it looks credible even from immediate proximity. At the same time it gives the whole vehicle an explanation of why it stands where it stands.
Finish and paint the wheel first, as the chain goes on last. Before bending, anneal the photo-etched strip over a flame to a slight glow and let it cool, as this softens the metal and it then follows the curve of the tire far better without cracking at the bends. Then draw the strip around the tread and fix it with tiny drops of cyanoacrylate at three or four places around the circumference. Place the joint down toward the base, where it cannot be seen.
Do not paint the chains silver. Start from a dark steel or graphite paint, add a suggestion of rust here and there, and only at the end carefully pick out the edges lightened by abrasion on the outside, where the chain scrapes against snow and stone. A few grains of snow powder or white pigment in the gaps will then complete the impression.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
