A set of pre-cut masks, 1:72 Kawanishi E7K1 Type 94 Model 1 Alf - Japanese national insignia, from Dead Design.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit but an accessory for a finished model. The set contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks of the Japanese national insignia, through which the hinomaru is sprayed with paint directly onto the surface of the model. The Kawanishi E7K1, that is the Type 94 Model 1, was a three-seat reconnaissance floatplane biplane of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The Allies designated it with the code name Alf and it took off from the catapults of surface ships.
Why spray the insignia through a mask
A sprayed insignia has no carrier film and no glossy edge and does not silver, so a gloss varnish under a decal and a softener both fall away. On a biplane with fabric-covered areas that is particularly useful: a decal breaks over the raised ribs of the covering and tears as it is tapped down, whereas paint follows the surface whatever its texture.
Let the coat cure thoroughly. Place the mask according to the color scheme drawing, press the edges down all the way around and smooth the transition with a toothpick. Spray the paint in several thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask, so that it cannot creep under it. With the upper wing of a biplane, reckon with it being harder to reach with the nozzle, so stand the model before spraying so that you aim at the area straight on. Lift the mask off while the paint is fresh.
