A set of figures of soft plastic in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Strelets-R, devoted to the Cossacks of the Kuban and Terek hosts. This is not a model of hardware, but an addition to dioramas and scenes. The figures come in the color of the plastic, unglued and unpainted, so the resulting look is entirely up to the modeler.
The Kuban and Terek Cossack hosts were among the formations settled on the northern edge of the Caucasus. They differed from the Cossacks of other regions mainly in appearance, because they took over Caucasian dress: a long coat with cartridge pockets sewn on the chest, a tall fur cap and a heavy cloak of coarse wool over the shoulders. They served as mounted formations and their appearance became one of the most easily recognizable silhouettes in a small scale, which is an advantage for a figure painter: the characters are immediately legible even once painted.
This set stands or falls on the composition. Before you reach for the glue, lay the figures out dry on the base and look for a scene, not a row. Cossack figures work well in an irregular knot, where the individual poses complement one another and some figure looks in a different direction from the rest. Only then glue them. Soft plastic holds only with cyanoacrylate and paint lasts on it only after a flexible primer. When painting, let the cloak and the coat dominate in muted tones and keep brighter color only for small items; the result then looks natural. Accent the cartridges on the chest with a dot of a lighter shade; do not try to draw them out with a line. At the end unify the whole figure with a thinned dark wash and brighten the edges with a dry brush.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
