Control surface and flap masks for the Kugisho P1Y1-S Ginga in 1:72 scale from Dead Design. A shadow sprayed along the dividing lines suggests that the surfaces are separate.
Responsibility details are not available.
A Dead Design masking set for painting the control surfaces and flaps on a model of the Japanese twin-engine P1Y1-S Ginga in 1:72 scale. The result is the optical impression of separate, slightly deflected surfaces. The surfaces do not actually deflect; it is paint on the surface of the model.
This kind of emphasis does not work the same way on every model. It comes out best on lighter, single-color finishes, where the shadow has something to stand out against. On a dark or broken-up camouflage, by contrast, it gets lost and there is a risk that almost nothing will be visible once it is laid on; it is then better either to leave the effect out, or to run it only along the most prominent lines. There is certainly no point in compensating by making the shadow darker; in 1:72 scale that quickly turns into a black line that looks drawn on.
The shadow belongs on a finished base scheme, not under it. The gloss varnish that follows under the decals and the final matte varnish will soften its crispness a little, which is rather a good thing: the effect is thereby unified with the rest of the finish and stops looking like a layer of its own.
The P1Y Ginga was a Japanese twin-engine naval bomber of the Second World War period. The version designated P1Y1-S was created as a night fighter conversion derived from the bomber variant.
