This item does not belong among the ordinary single-sprue sets. The manufacturer Strelets-R places it among its large thematic collections, which combine several groups of figures on one subject and make it possible to build an extensive scene without having to put it together from many separate purchases. The extent of the package corresponds to that. The material is soft plastic, the scale 1:72; the figures are supplied unpainted.
The subject refers to the closing phase of the siege of Sevastopol in the period of the Crimean conflict of the middle of the nineteenth century, that is, to the fighting over the fortified positions on the edge of the city. For a modeler that means a scene built around earth ramparts, baskets filled with soil, wooden revetments and artillery positions, where the figures move in broken terrain, not on an open plain.
With an extensive set the division of the work is the key. First sort the figures by groups and poses, and only then plan the area of the diorama, otherwise either an overcrowded or a half-empty scene arises. Do the painting in batches: deburr and wash all the pieces at once, spray the primer in bulk and apply the base tones of the uniforms by groups, not by individuals. With such a number of figures it pays to limit the palette to a few basic shades and to create the differences only with a glaze and a dry brush; the result then holds together. Build the terrain alongside the painting, so that the poses can be adjusted to the slope and the obstacles as you go. At the end unify the whole scene with a common dusting of pigment in the color of the ground, which visually joins the figures and the terrain.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, primer, terrain material and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
