Eduard 1:72 Lockheed U-2C masking set

Pre-cut masks for painting a Lockheed U-2C model in 1:72 scale. The set is an add-on to a kit, not a model or a spare part: the masks cover the glazing and save you the tape-cutting that is particularly thankless in a small scale. Sets carrying the TFace designation mask the glazing from the inside as well at Eduard; this item does not carry that designation.

The real subject

The U-2 is an American single-engine reconnaissance aircraft with a very slender wing of large span, designed for long flights at high altitude. The C version received a more powerful engine than the original configuration, which called for changes to the fuselage and the intakes. Characteristic of the U-2 is the glider-like wing layout and the simple landing gear, which on a model is best glued on only after painting.

Why masking pays off on the U-2

A U-2 model in 1:72 is small and slim, but the glazing of the cockpit is surprisingly broken up. Tape cut by hand at that size easily slips and a frame painted over shows immediately on a single-color dark finish. A pre-cut mask removes that problem and at the same time protects the clear part from fogging while the surrounding areas are sprayed.

How to work with the masks

• Degrease the glazing and let it dry perfectly, otherwise the mask will not hold.
• Lift the masks off one at a time with the tip of a scalpel so that they do not stretch.
• Align them to the engraving of the frames and only then press the edges down.
• In 1:72 scale spray really thinly, otherwise the paint will round the frames off.
• Take the mask off shortly after the paint has set.
