1:72 Vickers Wellington Mk.IA/IC BASIC masks is a set of pre-cut self-adhesive masking templates from New Ware for a model of the British twin-engine bomber in 1:72 scale. It contains a sheet of self-adhesive templates cut to the shape of one particular kit, in this case the Airfix one. The BASIC grade is the most restrained variant of the New Ware range and aims at the main glazing; the ADVANCED and EXPERT grades mask a wider extent. The set is not a kit; it is an accessory for the painting stage.
The Wellington was a British twin-engine bomber with a distinctive geodetic fuselage structure designed by Barnes Wallis. A skeleton of light sections woven into a lattice gave the airframe high resistance to damage, and the whole was covered with fabric. The Mk.IA and Mk.IC versions belonged to the early production standards and carried most of the weight of the night raids in the first years of the Second World War, until four-engine types replaced them. The Wellington nevertheless went on serving in coastal and training roles.
The bomber has a glazed nose, a cockpit and both gun turrets, and that means a lot of knife work directly over the clear parts when masking by hand. A pre-cut set shortens this part of the build from hours to minutes and, above all, makes the width of the framing uniform, which shows at once on a large glazed area. Place the mask with tweezers, press it down all around with a soft wooden stick and spray in thin coats at right angles to the edge so that paint does not run under it. A proven procedure is to spray the glazing with the interior color first and then with the upper camouflage. Mask and spray the turrets and the nose together with the fuselage so that the shade matches. Do not throw the leftover sheet away; the offcuts come in handy for masking small things on other models.
The package contains masking templates only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
