A photo-etched set of thin metal sheet for a model of the Japanese F-4EJ Kai Phantom in 1:72. It adds the details that injection-molded plastic can only manage in simplified form.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-4EJ Phantom Kai is the Japanese form of the two-seat Phantom II fighter. Japan obtained the machines through licensed production and some of them later went through an extensive upgrade, denoted by the epithet Kai. New avionics and a new radar extended the aircraft's service by a number of further years. The upgraded machines differ from the older Phantoms only in details, and all the more reason for the fine components of the cockpit and the surface to stand out on a model.
Etched parts are produced from thin metal sheet, so they reach places where injection-molded plastic inevitably stays too thick. In modeling, etched metal is therefore used for seat belts, instrument panels, grilles, covers and other small items with crisp edges. The set is prepared for 1:72 and supplements a kit rather than replacing it. Which parts this particular item contains and where they belong on a model are shown in the instructions from the manufacturer.
The parts are held on a carrier fret by small tabs. Cut through them with a sharp blade on a hard surface rather than with nippers, otherwise the thin sheet twists. Make the folds in a bending tool or between the jaws of flat pliers along the marked line. They are bonded with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a tiny amount, for example on the tip of a wire. Before painting, wash and degrease the metal and use an undercoat intended for metal, otherwise the layer will come away at the first touch.
The model, paints, glue and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise. Which kit in 1:72 the set is intended for should be checked against the manufacturer's data.
