Peewit 1:72 masking set — McDonnell FH-1 Phantom

This item is NOT a kit of an aircraft but a modeling accessory. It is a set of precisely die-cut self-adhesive masks intended for a model of the McDonnell FH-1 Phantom jet fighter in 1:72 scale. The masks cover the framing of the cabin glazing and as a rule also the tires of the landing gear wheels, so the tedious cutting of tape with a knife directly on the model is done away with. Peewit is a Czech brand specializing precisely in masking templates for aircraft models.

The real subject

The McDonnell FH-1 Phantom was the first jet aircraft designed from the outset for operation from the decks of US Navy aircraft carriers, and the first American jet machine to take off from and land on a ship's deck. It was powered by a pair of small jet engines housed in the wing roots, which gave the aircraft a characteristically clean fuselage with a conventional straight wing. It lasted only briefly in service and was quickly replaced by more capable types, yet it remains an important milestone in the transition of carrier aviation to jet propulsion. The name Phantom was later taken over by a far more famous heavy fighter from the same company.

Use

• take the template carefully out of the sheet, ideally with pointed tweezers or a scalpel
• stick it on a clean and degreased surface and press the edges down carefully
• spray in several thin coats rather than one heavy one — the paint then does not run under the edge
• lift the mask off while the paint is freshly dried, pulling back at an angle
• use the tire masks to spray the wheel rim without masking the tread

Who the set is for

For modelers who want sharp, even framing of the cabin in a small scale, and for everyone who does not want to lose time cutting masks by hand. It shortens the preparation considerably and reduces the risk of damaging the clear part with a knife.

The set holds masking templates only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package. The masks are cut to fit a particular kit — on another model of the same type the shape of the frames may differ.
