The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the first jet fighter in the world to enter series service, powered by a pair of Junkers Jumo 004 engines. The two-seat B-1a version came about by modifying the single-seat machine and served above all to train pilots on jet equipment in the closing stages of the Second World War.
