Cable drums are among the most universal scenic props, because they are tied neither to one army nor to one period. They work well in civilian as well as military scenes from the interwar years to the present day, at workshops, substations, stations and field repair shops. Drums placed about also usefully fill the empty areas of a base and help lead the viewer's eye to the main model without overshadowing it.
First rid the part of the sprue gate remnants and level the surface that will seat on the base by sanding it on fine paper. Choose the glue according to the material of the part; for small scenic accessories cyanoacrylate glue works well, as it holds reliably on resin and on plastic. The painting can be done with a brush as well as an airbrush: the ground is a dark base, after which a dry brush in a lighter metallic shade picks out the edges of the ribs and bands. Apply rust and dirt in spots rather than over the whole surface, and complete it with a dark wash into the joints. In 1:72 less is more, because heavy weathering visually merges a small object into a shapeless patch.
