About product

MiG-29 in Ukrainian Air Force markings - a 1:72 kit from IBG

Injection-molded plastic kit of the MiG-29 fighter in 1:72 scale from the Polish manufacturer IBG Models. The box focuses on machines in Ukrainian Air Force service. The 1:72 scale is practical with modern fighters: the model fits into an ordinary display case even next to a larger collection and still holds the characteristic shapes of the airframe.

The real subject

The MiG-29 is a twin-engine fourth-generation fighter developed in the Soviet Union and taken into service in the first half of the 1980s. Typical of its design is the smooth blending of the fuselage into the wing, which generates lift of its own, the twin vertical tails and the two engines placed separately in nacelles under the lifting center section. The air intakes deserve attention: during taxiing and takeoff the main intakes were closed by a door and the engines drew air through the upper openings at the wing root, which was meant to keep objects from the runway out. After the Soviet Air Force was divided up in 1992 the type was taken over by Ukraine as well, and the MiG-29 stayed in service there for a long time, with gradual upgrades.

Building and painting tips

Finish the cockpit and the nose gear bay before you close the fuselage. Paint the air intakes and their ducts and fill the seams inside them beforehand, because once glued they are out of reach and still visible on the finished model. Mask the canopy precisely; a die-cut masking set helps, as the canopy is a prominent feature on this type. Build gray camouflage schemes up in layers: base color, a slight lightening of the panel centers and only then a unifying translucent overspray, so that the transitions do not look blotchy. Gloss varnish the areas before the decals and even them out with a matte or semi-gloss coat once they have dried. Check the external stores and above all the aircraft standing on the ground against a photograph of the real machine, as the gear height and the setting of the surfaces on a parked machine differ from the flight position.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of modern fighters in a single 1:72 scale.
  • For modelers who want less usual markings in the display case than the standard Soviet ones.
  • For anyone interested in fourth-generation hardware and its operators.
  • For builders who enjoy working with gray camouflage schemes.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Check the particular production version in the kit instructions.

Check the number of schemes and the contents of the package on the kit box.

Building a modern fighter in 1:72 scale is manageable, but the cockpit, the air intakes and the external stores call for precision. For a first model we recommend a simpler subject.

The two-seat trainer has a lengthened cockpit for two crew members and a differently shaped canopy. It is a separate kit, not a variant in this box.
