The 1:72 Mitsubishi A7M1/A7M2 Reppu control surface and flap masks from Dead Design. The sprayed shadow creates the impression that the moving surfaces are separate from the fixed structure.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set masks neither the cockpit nor the bays, but the outlines of the moving surfaces: the ailerons on the wing, the elevators on the horizontal tail and the rudder on the fin. A thin shadow is sprayed around them through the template, and on a finished model the eye reads it as a gap, so the surfaces look separate from the fixed structure. It is painting on the surface, nothing more: the part does not become movable and does not deflect anywhere. That is exactly why the effect is called an optical illusion.
The effect is the more pronounced the larger the area of the control surface. By Japanese standards the Reppu had a sizable wing and correspondingly dimensioned moving surfaces, so the outline shadow has something to run around and does not remain just a barely perceptible dash at the edge. The shadow at the same time gives the model logic: it shows where the structure ends and where the moving part begins, which does not follow from engraved lines on their own.
The Mitsubishi A7M Reppu was a Japanese carrier fighter intended as the successor to the Zero. Only a few prototypes and pre-production machines were built. The A7M1 was powered by the Nakajima Homare radial engine, whose output did not meet expectations, and the A7M2 received a more powerful Mitsubishi powerplant. According to the name, the set is cut for both versions.
