The 1:72 Mitsubishi Ki-21-Ib Sally control surface and flap masks from Dead Design. The templates define the outline of the moving surfaces for spraying a shadow.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set brings out the outlines of the ailerons and control surfaces with a sprayed shadow, which on a finished model gives the impression that the surfaces are separate from the fixed structure. It is not a real deflection and the parts stay immovable; the whole effect lies in the paint. This item is marked for the Ib subversion; the set for the Ia is listed separately.
The order of the work decides the result more than the templates themselves. The shadow belongs on finished base paint and ideally only after the panel lines have been brought out, so that one technique does not overpower the other. Before the weathering, by contrast, because a wash and pigments will then soften the shadow and set it into the surface. If you lay it on last, it will hang above the rest of the finish as a foreign element.
The control surfaces can be shaded with a freehand airbrush too, and an experienced modeler can manage it. The difference is in repeatability and symmetry: an outline guided by hand never comes out at the same width or the same distance from the edge on the right and the left aileron, and the asymmetry shows on a model sooner than the effect itself. A template keeps both sides the same and in addition allows a crisper transition, which is hard to do freehand.
The Mitsubishi Ki-21, designated Sally by the Allies, was a twin-engine bomber of the Japanese Army Air Force with radial engines. The Ib was a later subversion of the early I production series.
