Eduard 1:72 Mitsubishi Ki-21-Ib Sally SPACE set

A set from the SPACE line of the Czech manufacturer Eduard for 1:72 scale. It brings three-dimensional (3D) decals with layered relief and pre-printed color for the instrument panel and the cockpit panels. On a bomber the glazing is extensive and the interior is clearly visible, so a well-worked pilot's section really tells on the finished model.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi Ki-21 was a twin-engine bomber of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force, known to the Allies under the code name Sally. The Ki-21-Ib version belonged to the early development series and brought an enlarged bomb bay and changes to the defensive armament. The aircraft had an all-metal structure with retractable landing gear and the glazed nose that is characteristic of the type.

Application

The SPACE decals are not soaked in water as a whole and they are not self-adhesive. Moisten only the backing paper with a damp sponge and a drop of detergent, lift the individual part off it with tweezers, set it on a clean, degreased surface into a drop of PVA, that is white glue, and press it down with a soft tool so that it beds over its whole area. The manufacturer does not recommend super glue, and do not use a decal softener at all, as the layered print would suffer. Sand the areas under the decal smooth beforehand and clear away any burrs. On a bomber it pays to try first without glue whether the cockpit can be closed once the interior is in, and only then to glue it permanently. Even out the finished interior with a thin coat of matte clear.
