The N1K1-Jb Shiden Model 11 Otsu is a kit of the Japanese Kawanishi fighter in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Aoshima.

The kit captures the land-based Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden fighter aircraft in the Model 11 Otsu version, that is, in the configuration also designated as the N1K1-Jb. The Japanese Otsu is the second character of the traditional series and corresponds to the Latin b, so both designations in the name point to one and the same version. The 1:72 scale suits larger collections of Japanese aircraft.
The Shiden came about by reworking the Kawanishi Kyofu floatplane fighter into a land-based machine. From the original design it kept the mid-mounted wing layout, which forced an unusually long telescopic landing gear. It was powered by the Nakajima Homare eighteen-cylinder radial, and among its merits were automatic combat flaps, which made maneuvering combat easier for the pilot. The Allies knew it under the code name George. The Model 11 Otsu version represented a further step in the development of the armament, in which the twenty-millimeter cannons moved into the wing and the underwing gondolas fell away, which benefited the aerodynamics. The Shiden ranked among the most capable Japanese fighters of the end of the war, but production struggled with quality and with engine unreliability.
Cut the small parts of the landing gear and the armament off carefully and sand the sprue marks down thoroughly, as they are clearly visible in 1:72 scale. The radial engine will stand out after a dark wash and a dry brush. Spray the dark green upper surface of Japanese naval machines in thin coats and add restrained wear of the paint on the leading edges and at the wing root. Apply gloss varnish under the decals and finally unify the finished model with matte varnish, so that the surface looks uniform.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
