This item from MH models is not a kit of an aircraft but a detail set intended for swapping the wheels on a plastic Mustang kit. A resin casting holds sharper edges and a finer structure than an injection-molded part, so more detail shows on the rim and on the tire. On a model standing on its landing gear the wheels belong among the first things a viewer notices, so this is an improvement with a very good ratio of work to effect.
The North American P-51B and P-51C Mustang were the versions that received the license-built Merlin engine and with it markedly better performance at high altitude. They are told apart from the later P-51D mainly by still having the original glazing behind the pilot's head instead of a bubble canopy. The main wheels were retractable and folded into the wing; on surviving machines several types of rim and tread pattern appear, so it pays to compare the set with photographs of the machine you are building.
First wash the castings in warm water with detergent to remove any residue of mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, never with nippers - resin cracks. Sanding is best done wet and with breathing protection. Glue the wheels with cyanoacrylate glue, because ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on resin. After the primer has gone on, spray the tire in dark gray and separate the rim with masking tape or paint it in with a brush. A light dust pigment on the tread and a slight dirtying of the landing gear doors give the result credibility.
This is an accessory to a kit, not a stand-alone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
